Waterloo Day

Today is the 195th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The battle has always held a special fascination for me, and for many years I used to take groups there, calling into arguably the most evocative site on the battlefield, Hougoumont (left). Indeed, being a French speaker I got on well with the family who owned it and had many a welcome coffee in their kitchen over the years, while they were very patient with the groups I brought into their working farm. But the family have retired now, and the farm is closed – and the old gates of the farm firmly shut. Plans are in hand to have the farm renovated and open to visitors by 2015, the bi-centenary, and in the UK a group called Project Hougoumont has been established to help raise funds for the renovation and also build a new, British, memorial in the grounds.
